Business time management is critical to your success. We only have so much time in each day and in business, time is money! Down to it’s simplest form, the person or business that spends the most time on the highest value items wins.

Whether you are interviewing candidates for an open position or coaching your existing employees on time management here are some of the keys to success.

If you want to take on the big guys you must prepare, organize, delegate, and build a quality routine better than the competition. These core items should be a part of any management training or coaching and will go a long way to help maximize productivity and efficiency.

Prepare: Research your project prior to starting. Assemble contact lists and organize company information. Effective management requires that you prepare and train your staff to do the same.

Create S.M.A.R.T. Goals to set your organization on the right path. Include this as part of any management training or sales coaching. Having specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time bound goals will give your management staff a clear vision of your expectations and success.

Routine: Create a management routine that develops coaching skills and provides the proper structure for your employees to succeed. Build a successful team by building a successful routine.

Organization: Organization is key to effective business time management. Having a system and sticking to it will help you remain on top of all the different items a successful manager is responsible for.

Delegation: Delegation can be separated into two categories: tasks or responsibilities delegated to others, such as direct reports or outsourcing, or tasks delegated to specific times of the day. Here is an excellent article on delegation

Develop these skills and you and your team will leverage your time better and be more effective at business time management. Below are a few more tips and techniques to help you be more successful.

Tips for Better Time Management

• Prioritize your tasks each day, attacking the most challenging or difficult one first. Plan your work and work your plan.

• Scale a large project into manageable sections and complete one at a time. This will eliminate the feeling of being overwhelmed by any one project and reduce procrastination.

• Think of your strategic priorities if you find yourself wandering off point during a smaller projects.

• Schedule short mandatory “refresh” times during the day to ensure that you perform your best and avoid mental fatigue.

• Identify your most productive time of the day and schedule your most challenging tasks during this period. This will guarantee your best performance on your highest priority items.
